Mary Katrantzou Katmanda Dress // From the Archives

Jenn Lake Chicago

If you’ve followed the blog for a while, you know that Mary Katrantzou is one of my absolute favorite designers. Her use of prints and colors is second to none, and each season, I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see what she’ll come up with next. Over the years, I’ve featured many of her pieces (examples here, here, here, and here), and they all occupy a special space in my closet. Recently, she partnered with MATCHESFASHION.COM to re-issue ten of her most iconic dresses in celebration of her tenth anniversary. Such a fun idea! As such, I knew I had to bring out my Katmanda dress for a few photos. The stamp graphics immediately grabbed my attention before buying it in 2013.

The original version from five years ago was created in a heavy cotton twill. There’s an almost denim-like quality to it. The newest version is made in a thick satin which I assume moves more and has a bit of lightness to it (comparatively). As with all of Mary Katrantzou’s pieces, the dress is UK sizing, which tends to run a bit small. Lastly, I’m also loving the re-issues of the lamp shade skirt, the typewriter dress, the Fabergé dress, and the very first dress to walk the runway of her debut collection.
