Adulting is tough, right? There are never enough hours in the day! One of my biggest challenges? Making time for family – especially my dad.
My dad is hilarious. Anyone who meets him instantly feels a connection with him. In fact, if you open the dictionary to the word, “extrovert,” his photo is next to it. He loves meeting new people, striking up conversations, and hearing all about what makes them tick. When I was child, meals at restaurants would take more than two hours because he’d want to chat with all of the servers about their lives. My brother and I would always roll our eyes at each other and think, “Oh dad. Not again!”
He also loves helping people better understand how their wired. We often joke as a family that he had me take Myers Briggs by the time I could walk, lol (I’m an ENFP, just like him). My dad was the reason why I stepped into college on the very first day knowing I wanted to be a PR major. Since I was little, he’s helped me reflect upon my strengths, my weaknesses, my career path, and beyond.
Growing up, he worked a lot, and I didn’t really get to see him. Don’t get me wrong, he always made time for family dinners and to support us at big events – think soccer and lacrosse games, track and swim meets, theatre performances, etc. But most of the time, he had to work.
Now that I’m an adult, my dad is retired, and I’m the one who’s always working. As a result, I’ve regretted not spending more time with him. Recently, I decided to make a more concerted effort to do so, and it’s all starting today! This morning, my dad and I are heading to VEGAS! Sure, Sin City isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind for daddy/daughter quality time (lol), but there’s one reason why I chose it – the Beatles.
Yes, the Beatles.
My dad is the world’s #1 Beatles fan. Growing up, we used to listen to all of their songs together. Some of my fondest memories were watching him play his guitar and strum out their tunes. We also used to sing “Twist and Shout” in the car together and had our individual singing parts. We still do.
Therefore, we’re flying to Vegas to see the Beatles LOVE show. I saw it a few years ago, and the entire time I couldn’t help but think, “My dad should be here to see this.” I’m SO excited for him!
It’ll just be me and my dad on the trip, and I can’t wait to spend time together… just the two of us. Maybe for a moment, the highs and lows of adulting will fade away while we twist, shout, and sing along.
