What to Wear to the 11th Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

Solace London One Shoulder Ruffle Dress

One of the most common questions I get asked about the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is, “what should I wear?!” This annual event that takes place in New York City and Los Angeles is known for the BEST people watching. Everyone dresses to the nines (both men AND women), and each year gets better and better! Seeing what everyone is wearing is literally my fave aspect of the day (after the champagne and polo, of course)! With all of that in mind, I thought it would be helpful to create a post about what to wear to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic.

WHAT AM I PLANNING TO WEAR TO THE VEUVE CLICQUOT POLO CLASSIC?

A little background on how I chose my outfit this year. I’ve spent the past two months scouring stores and new online inventory. Yes, I’m crazy, haha! At first, this dress caught my eye, until I realized it would be too warm to wear all day, especially based on recent weather forecasts. No thank you! With that price tag, I’m not looking to “glisten in the sun all day,” lol! Plus, I wore a yellow dress to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in LA last October and also for the first year we attended in NYC, so I’m looking to change it up this year. This pleated maxi was also on my radar – I love the criss-cross bodice!

Fortunately, one of my favorite brands reached out about a month ago to see if they could dress me for the event. Naturally, I immediately said, “yes!” They had so many gorgeous options, and I love my final pick. I’m so excited to wear the outfit this Saturday!

WHAT KIND OF HEELS TO WEAR TO THE VEUVE CLICQUOT POLO CLASSIC?

Let’s just say – you gotta be “kitten” me (kitten heels, that is). Ladies – DO NOT WEAR STILETTOS OR HIGH HEELS. If you must, only opt for flats or a low heel. Almost the entire event is on grass, so you’ll find yourself poking through the ground the whole time. Plus, for the New York Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, there’s A LOT of walking involved: to and from the ferry, then to and from the grounds, etc. In the past, I’ve gotten away with a block heel for the LA event, because there isn’t much walking, but definitely not for the NYC VCPC. Aside from a kitten heel, I recommend flat sandals, wedges, espadrilles, or ballet flats. You’ll thank me later!

VEUVE CLICQUOT’S SIGNATURE HUE

Yep, Veuve Clicquot has their very own brand of Pantone color (Pantone 137C, to be specific). While most people assume it’s yellow, it’s actually ORANGE. For the past few years, I’ve tried to find pieces that compliment their signature hue. Since most designers don’t offer options in this color way, I tend to go for a mix of orange-yellowish dresses. Here are some of my faves for this year, including my fave yellow pleated dress. I wore a similar version in lilac when we were in Paris.

PRETTY IN PINK

If you have tickets to the Rose Garden, perhaps you should “think pink.” Most of the decor revolves around this pastel color, and I always love the way photos turn out when someone wears the hue! One of my fave styles is this multi-tiered rose colored dress. The fabric is so feminine and pretty! I also really love this multi-colored cotton midi dress – perfect lightweight option for the summer sun.

MAXI DRESSES

I love a good maxi dress for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. The challenge is that the bottom of the dress is going to get totally destroyed from the dirt and grass. If you decide to wear a maxi, I suggest getting one that’s affordable! The last thing you want is to spend a lot of money on a dress that will be dragging on the ground all day. The dress I wore above to the 2016 event was only $53 AND machine washable! Here are some fun ideas that won’t break the bank (all of which are under $65):

HATS AT THE VEUVE CLICQUOT POLO CLASSIC

It’s also a great idea to protect yourself from the elements with a hat – maybe a wide beach hat or one with a fun accent color. Thankfully, there are so many cute and affordable options on the market. Here are a few of my faves:

VEUVE CLICQUOT SUNGLASSES

It’s no secret I’m obsessed with sunglasses! While the team at Veuve Clicquot typically hands out branded sunglasses before getting on the ferry, I highly recommend bringing an extra pair just in case. Here are some of my faves:

THE BEST BAGS FOR THE POLO CLASSIC

For the past few years, Fendi has been one of that main fashion partners for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a major presence this year as well. Additionally, the brand is all about their classic “double F” zucca print right now, so plan on seeing plenty of logomania this weekend. Time to break out that Carrie Bradshaw approved Fendi baguette bag from storage! Lastly, I LOVE a fun summer-friendly tote for VCPC. Something in woven straw, bamboo, or similar will definitely do the trick!

WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE VEUVE CLICQUOT POLO CLASSIC

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen! The sun can be scorching hot, and, depending on where you’re sitting at the event, you may be in the direct sun for six hours! My go-to sunscreen option is Supergoop! Sunscreens. They’re a total game changer! I especially love the Unseen Sunscreen, a weightless and scentless SPF 40. Not only is it antioxidant-rich, but it’s also an oil-free formula (which is great for my oily skin). I also always top it off with their 100% Mineral Invincible Setting Powder in Translucent, which sets your makeup, it’s sweat-resistant and reduces shine.
