For the past 11 years, we’ve loved spending part of the summer on Nantucket. The island holds a very special place in our hearts, and this annual trip is one of our most cherished experiences of the year. After spending so much time in the destination, we’ve also mastered the art of a Nantucket packing list. After all, the Grey Lady’s weather (as the island is fondly referred to), can be temperamental. One minute it’s sunny and warm, and the next is a downpour and cooler temps.
Being prepared for multiple weather scenarios is key to setting you up for a seamless vacation. So what are some items on this year’s Nantucket packing list? Let’s dive in!
Nantucket Packing List
First and foremost, layers are a MUST. I often pack this long, cozy wrap to wear at dinner in the evenings. The temps typically cool off at night, so it’s helpful to have an extra piece just in case. I’ll also be packing this new Ralph Lauren sweater. Quick tip – if you’re a women’s small or extra-small, opt for the boy’s large or x-large version to save some money. 🙂
Comfortable walking shoes? Also a must. Save time (and space in your luggage) and keep your stiletto heels at home. Trust! The brick-paved and cobblestone streets of Nantucket are meant for sneakers, espadrilles, and summer sandals. Wedges or a chunky heel can be fine for a dressy night out – but you will not fare well with stilettos or pumps.
Sun Hats
Another absolute go-to item? Sun hats. In fact, this year – I’m bringing SIX hats. A little over-the-top, lol. But protecting my skin from the sun is key. Plus, they keep my head cool and they help me avoid overheating during the day.
From visits to Sconset to enjoying time at Steps Beach or Madaket, hats are the perfect ACK accessory. My two favorites right now are this floral embroidered bucket hat and larger beach hat.
Stripes, Stripes, Stripes
The coastal getaway is made for all things stripes. I’m excited to pack this striped top and short set for travel days, along with this gorgeous striped dress from my summer capsule collection. Striped pieces are basically my Nantucket uniform.
Matching Summer Sets
It’s no secret I’m obsessed with dresses. This year, I’m packing a bunch of really chic new styles. However, I’m especially excited to pack some matching summer sets. For the past few years, I’ve really started loving matching separates – from skirt and top combos, to crop tops and shorts. There’s something so sophisticated about them, and I love they’re extremely versatile.
Chic Summer Handbags
From lobster rolls at Cru to cocktails at Summer House, chic summer handbags often save the day. Normally during our trips, we are gone from our hotel or rental house for the entire day. Therefore, I always need my bags to be stocked with everything I need from sunrise to sundown. At the same time, large handbags aren’t really a thing on Nantucket.
Restaurants are small, Town is busy and crowded, and you don’t want to be schlepping around a huge backpack or oversized bag the whole day. Therefore, I’ve found small raffia bags and canvas totes are a fantastic option for a day on Nantucket.
Moreover, I’m super excited to be bringing along my Nantucket Lightship Basket (pictured above) I designed last year through Sylvia’s Antiques. For years, I’ve been wanting to invest in one; it was a dream come true to make it happen! These are the types of pieces you pass down from generation to generation, and I’m delighted our niece will own mine one day.
