Years ago, I felt velvet was an outdated fabric. From home textiles to fashion, velvet just felt overly brash. Lately, however, I’ve been loving the luxe fabric – especially this yellow velvet tiered dress.

Sure, several pieces of apparel and accessories still conjure more 90’s Clueless than classy. However, this vivacious velvet dress blends both trendy and timeless all in one.

Yellow Velvet Tiered Dress

As most of you know, I love the brand Tuckernuck. Every season, they offer a delightful and curated array of colorful and preppy pieces for your home and wardrobe. After seeing this gorgeous yellow velvet tiered dress, I knew that I needed to have it. Plus, it’s a versatile piece that can be dressed up and also worn a casual basis.

On this particular day, I decided to dress it up in a monochromatic way. After all, if the Inauguration taught us anything, coats and outfits are back in a big and bold way. Plus, yellow is a mood lifting hue and immediately puts a smile on your face.

Styling Tips

Planning to invest in a yellow velvet dress? Below, I’m sharing some of my top tips to styling a look that can work for all seasons. Keep in mind, velvet tends to air on the side of cooler temps for fall and winter.

Monochromatic Look

Alright, let’s chat about this monochromatic look. In essence, I chose to embrace all of the yellow hues. Often, I find that people are scared to wear too much color. Friends, don’t be afraid to go all-in with beautiful hues.

In this case, I chose to wear the dress with a coat and bag in the same hue. Sure, it’s a lot of bright yellow. However, the key was to pair different textures together.

Let the Eye Rest

Over the past year, I’ve started to really embrace (and frankly think more) about this philosophy. Similar to interior design, fashion/outfits are all about balance. Furthermore, it’s about infusing different textures into one outfit. Layers, if you will. Once you start layering pieces, it’s imperative to find moments for the eye to rest.

Therefore, while love a velvet dress, fuzzy coat and bright yellow bag, outfits also need to provide some space for calm. In this case, I chose to style things with over-the-knee boots and black sunglasses.

By choosing one hue for my accessories, I’m giving the time and space for the eye to “rest.” Additionally, the dress takes the main focus. Love that!
